RESEARCHING ARTICLES IS FOR EVERYONE

Research: It’s Not Just for Scientists-It’s for Everyone!

What image does the word “research” evoke in your mind- is it a white lab coat and beakers? You wouldn’t be alone if that is the case. Most people only associate research with the scientific field, however that’s quite the misconception. Research, at its core, is the process of gathering, analyzing, and interpreting information. With it, you can expand your knowledge, solve problems, and make informed decisions. While it is often associated with laboratories, experiments, and academic studies, research extends far beyond the scientific community. It plays a crucial role in various aspects of daily life, education, business, and personal development. The more you combat the misconception that research is a complex, technical process reserved for experts, the sooner you can actively employ research to help guide your decisions and become a well-rounded individual.

Why Research Techniques Are Important

In the age of the internet and social media especially, we are faced with a wealth of information unlike ever before. Consider this situation- you are feeling under the weather with symptoms you’ve not experienced before. What is the first thing you’re going to do? Most people will do what we have all been warned against and google their symptoms. If you aren’t used to applying research techniques to your life, you may be tempted to take the first site that shows up on your search without searching for other plausible examples. If you only take one result, it may provide you with incorrect or incomplete information. Additionally, applying research techniques to everyday problems can provide you a framework to identify the quality of your information sources.

Part of the research process is also knowing when to involve professionals and how to advocate for yourself. It’s important to attempt gathering information on your own to provide a framework for the questions you may have. However, it is entirely possible that at times, you run into roadblocks or are faced with an issue that cannot be resolved by your efforts alone. This is especially true when it comes to your health. In many cases, we seek out professionals in the medical field to assist with issues we aren’t knowledgeable about. But what specialist do you see for a problem? How will you know who to contact? In many instances, you have to advocate for yourself, and to do that, it takes research and becoming aware of how to communicate the symptoms you experience. The more information you have, the better-informed decisions you make.

You Research Every Day Without Realizing It

Research is not just confined to academic institutions or laboratories; it is a crucial tool that helps people make better decisions, stay informed, and continuously learn. Whether we realize it or not, we engage in research regularly in various aspects of our daily lives.

Whether you’re shopping around to find the best deals to compare on products or even researching information to create art or write, you are conducting research. Research doesn’t have to be this grand procession, it is simply ensuring you have enough information to make the best decision for you. For example, as we live in a consumer society, you are always having products and services advertised to you at a fast pace. When you’re faced with ten different choices for the same product, how are you going to determine which is the best for you? Do you read the ingredients list on a product? Do you consult reviews and photos? Do you speak with others in your life who have perhaps tried multiple variations of products? All of these things are research.

If you expand this example beyond products and services, think about how you make decisions for important life events. Many people are faced with decisions such as what career paths to follow or where is an ideal place to move and begin to set down roots. You realistically aren’t going to jump into a large decision like this without taking a moment to evaluate all of your options. This means gathering information from multiple sources, comparing options and how they fit into the framework of your life, and identifying key steps to put you on the path to success.

Research Can Help You Find Your Voice

We are constantly bombarded with opinions and ideas from around the world. With an unending stream of information coming at us, sometimes it’s difficult to discern where you stand on a particular topic. Perhaps you are an aspiring writer but you aren’t sure what your ‘voice’ is or what your niche is. It can be difficult finding a way to stand out amongst the crowd. Perhaps you want to use your talents to advocate for causes close to your heart. Or maybe you want to bring a new perspective to a field. In either case, you need to present yourself as a knowledgeable individual who knows what they’re talking about. Research your field of interest to find out what perspective you can bring to the table that is unique to you. Our world thrives on diversity, and understanding what you can bring to a situation that distinguishes your viewpoint is critical.

We have all encountered that one person who always seems to regurgitate information without understanding the full framework of an argument and takes information at face value. If you take the time to be informed and do your research into important issues, you can contribute to discussions in a meaningful way.

As an author, you create to tell stories but also provide a new and fresh narrative to the world. It doesn’t matter if you’re in the STEM fields or not, we all want to persuade readers of something. Authors in publishing industries aim to tell a story that enchants readers to support them in follow-up publications. They often tell people if you want to improve your writing-read, and read diverse literature. The more you gather differing perspectives, the easier it is to identify what styles and tones you agree with and why.

Research is for Everyone-Always!

Research is central to the human experience. The more we investigate a topic, the more we learn, and that influences how you move forward through life. Curiosity is central to becoming a life-long researcher in your own right. You don’t need to be considered a high-level academic to engage in research, you simply need the motivation to find answers to questions. By continuously asking questions and researching topics, you will continue to grow as a person and find your own opinion on matters instead of being swayed by a crowd. Remember, research is for everyone!
